Water Gardens - How To Build A Pond

Wednesday, October 31st, 2007

By Keith Davitt Water Gardening is the fastest growing segment of the horticultural world and over twenty five million Americans now enjoy the pleasures of splashing water, swimming fish and the myriad wonderful water plants. According to Lilypons, that number is increasing at the rate of 15 to 25 percent each year. And no wonder. There is just nothing like a small pool with a trickling stream, colorful fish, margin grasses and water lilies. Birds come down to bath and in fact, you can create an entire little ecosystem - a water world with a host of water related flora and fauna. The sound of water gurgling over rocks is the music my wife and I listen to each evening of patio dining throughout the spring and summer and well into fall. I design them into many of my clients gardens and no one has yet regretted it. Quite the contrary. Talk to anyone who has a water garden. They sound like converts to another way of life. So happy are water gardeners with the decision they’ve made, we’re going to show you how to build your own. If you want a water garden but don’t want or haven’t the time to build your own, contact us at landscape-design-garden-plans.com. We’ll be delighted to design and build you a water garden or well help find someone in your area. Building a Water Garden Water garden construction is, in principle anyway, easy. It is simply a matter of digging a hole, dropping in an underliner, a liner and a re circulating pump and filling with water. Put in a few plants, fish, snails and such and its done. You have a functional water garden. How attractive it is, though, is another story - and that is where a lot of the work comes in. The hole should be of a pleasing shape, geometric for a formal garden, natural for an informal. Depth is not terribly critical for over wintering fish because of the effective pond heaters which can be purchased. (As long as the water doesn’t freeze all the way down, and poisonous gasses can escape, the fish will be fine all winter.) But a pond that is three feet or more in any direction looks best with a depth of at least 18 inches. For larger ponds, some portion, especially in cold areas, should be 3 or 4′ deep. (My water garden is about 6 ft. on the long side and over two feet in depth at the deepest part. Vary the depth. A shallow section where the fish are easily visible and where you can feed them and watch them romping around is a pleasant feature. Also, when digging the hole, build shelves into the sides. These are useful for placing margin plants and for hiding the liner and pump elements with river stones. Two shelves is ideal but one will work, especially on a small pool. It is critical that the top edge of the hole be level all around. To check this, take a long, straight board and lay it across the pool with a level on it, or use a string with a line-level. Where it is low, build up with soil or lower where it is high. Getting this right will make it possible to fill the pool to the top with no portion of liner showing. When the hole is dug, clean it of any protruding roots and large rocks, then place in the underliner. This can be an old carpet, a carpet liner or liner protection fabric, purchased from the suppliers. Make it as smooth and neat inside as possible, folding the material into pleats. Work from the inside to the outside, starting at one place and working around the sides in one direction. Leave a little extra over the edges and cut away the rest. Next comes the liner. There are several material choices for the liner, my preference generally being 45 mil EPDM Pond Liner material. This is flexible, relatively easy to work with and is strong. 30 mil Butyl rubber Pond Liner is also good and is a little easier to work with. Lay the liner in as you did the underliner, working out the wrinkles, and folding over the excess. Leave about a ft. extra over the edge and trim away the rest. (A linoleum knife, if you can find one, works well. A utility knife is also fine.) Once the liner is in place, mark the water level, fill it and let it sit several hours. There should be no drop in water level. If there is, go all along the sides and look for a low spot. Most likely that is where it is loosing water. Holes are not common and should not occur if you have been reasonably careful. Being possessed of abundant wisdom you no doubt acquired all the materials you would need for this project before beginning. Thus, you now find yourself surrounded by a ton of river rock and perhaps field stone of all sizes and shapes. River stone is rounded by the effect of water and looks right in water. Field stone is also a natural stone, weathered and smoothed and looks good around the outside of the pond. You also have your pump near by. (The size of the pump you will need is a factor of the gallon capacity of the pond. Your supplier will tell you how to determine that and help you to select the right size.) (Or go to landscape-design-garden-plans.com). Recirculating pumps draw water in through a filter and pump it back out, usually through plastic tubing which runs from the pump to outside the pond, usually to some sort of waterfall. From there it runs back into the pond, aerating the water and providing visual and audio pleasure. (Fish love this. You’ll often find them sporting in the water as it pours into the pond.) The filter can either be connected to the pump or you can use an external filter for easy cleaning. Place the pump in the deepest portion of the pond, on the opposite end from where the water returns to the pond. Hopefully that will also be somewhere you can easily get at it. Run both the electric cord and the plastic return hose up the sides of the pond. Before you cut the hose, which carries the water from the pump to the waterfall, make sure it is in place with enough extra hose with the pump for easy lifting for cleaning. Since you don’t want to see the pump, place rocks on both sides of it, both just a little taller than the pump, and lay a rock over the top. Use the rest of your river stone and the field stone to lay into the sides and along the top for a natural look. Sand and or small rounded gravel can be poured over the bottom. You next need to create the means by which the water is returned to the pool a waterfall of some sort. This needn’t be elaborate and shouldn’t be out of proportion to the pond. Above all, make sure that where the water comes out of the tubing, no portion of it fails to make it back to the pond. If it does, the pond will slowly, but surely empty. This is why you left extra liner. Put extra liner behind and around the waterfall, all sloping to the pond. Water may escape and run under the bottom of the rocks but will still end up back in the pond. More than ninety percent of leaks occur at the waterfall. Build your flow-way or water fall over the liner and try to have the water drop from the lip of a smooth, flat stone into the pool, or to run over rounded rocks into the pool. Put attractive stones over the tubing, making sure not to crush it so much such that you get a spray of water instead of a flow. It is a good idea to look at natural water features, streams and such, or at pictures of them to get stone placement right. Nature has a wonderful way of distributing stones along and within a stream or pond and an imitation of that, as much as possible, will give you the best look. In general, try for balance. Dont have a lot of big stone in the waterfall, for example, and none to the sides. Use a blend of sizes from small rounded gravel to hefty rocks. Put only rounded river stones in the pond and try to completely cover the liner. This will never look completely natural but it can look quite good if done with some sensitivity. Once stone placement is done, the major portion of the job is over and now it is simply a matter of stocking it, first with plants, and in a few days, allowing the pH to stabilize, with fish. You should now have an attractive pond. Atkins Diet - Is It as Effective as They Say?

Tuesday, October 30th, 2007

By Trevor Mulholland Even though it has been several decades since the late Dr. Robert Atkins created his self-named low carbohydrate diet, it was only in the late 1990s and early 2000s that the Atkins diet took the weight loss world by storm. Millions of people rode on the low carb bandwagon and nutrition experts were appalled. The uproar over the diet is understandable; after all, it went against all the principles of the medically accepted and traditional low fat regimen, which had been the norm for years. Simply put, going on the Atkins diet or doing Atkins means that a person has to drastically cut down on his or her intake of carbohydrates, especially those found in starchy foods. People find that this can be difficult, especially those who have become accustomed to consuming food like bread, potatoes, cakes, cereals, and pasta regularly for years. On the up side, protein-rich foods are not only allowed on this low carb diet, they are actually encouraged. So theres no need to give up mayonnaise, butter, pork, beef, fried food, and many others that are off-limits in low fat diets. There are four phases in this diet. The first stage, called Induction, requires the dieter to reduce his or her carb intake to 20 grams per day for two weeks. Carbohydrates should be acquired from vegetables, so the usual starchy baked products and fruits are forbidden during this period. After Induction, you are allowed to gradually increase your intake of carbohydrates until you reach your carb threshold, or the amount of carbs you can safely eat without gaining weight. For many adults, 60 to 90 grams of carbs per day is the limit. With this diet, you count carbs, not calories. The Atkins premise is that carbohydrates, which our bodies use for fuel, are the culprits responsible for weight gain. Excess carbohydrates increase blood sugar levels, which in turn make us feel hungry in a short amount of time after a meal. An increase in your blood sugar can also trigger the pancreas to create more insulin, which in turn influences how the body converts carbs to fats, which are manifested in that paunch or those love handles. This extra weight can lead to many health problems, including diabetes and heart disease. In addition to helping a person lose a significant amount of weight in a short period of time, a number of clinical studies have shown the Atkins diet to be beneficial in the reduction of the so-called bad cholesterol that can lead to heart disease. In addition, other studies suggest that the diet has at least a positive short-term effect on diabetics, and anecdotal evidence states that it is also instrumental in relieving the symptoms of disorders such as polycystic ovarian syndrome. One thing that the critics praise about the Atkins low carb diet is its education of people about being picky about foods; to avoid junk food and those that contain nothing but sugar and empty calories. Another aspect of the diet that meets with expert approval is its encouragement of exercise. It still follows the basic tenet that if you take in more than you burn, you will still gain weight, no matter what diet you are on. One relative difficulty that reduced-carbohydrate dieters complain about is food boredom. Perhaps this was a problem in the early days, but not so anymore. Today, there are plenty of mock foods patterned after regular dishes like pancakes, mashed potatoes, cheesecake, muffins, and the like but without the carbohydrates and sugar. If you have a craving for something sweet, you can still eat candy bars, cakes, and chocolate products that are sweetened not with sugar but with sucralose. Weight loss on this low carb diet is quicker than that observed on low-fat diets, but remember that you should not shed pounds too rapidly 2 to four pounds a week is the average. And to make sure to take the necessary dietary supplements to make sure that you are getting all the nutrients you need to stay healthy while losing weight. You should also remember to drink plenty of water. This will help flush waste from your body and assist it in the burning of fat as the major source of fuel. Going on the Atkins diet can help you in your weight loss efforts if you follow the basic tenets: dont overeat (eat only until you feel satisfied); dont under-eat (eat whenever you feel hungry); exercise; be realistic. You should not aspire to be razor thin. Rather, aim for your ideal body weight and stay healthy on your way there. Wood Turning for Summer - Planting Tools of Yesterday and Today

Monday, October 29th, 2007

By Darrell Feltmate Wood turners as a group tend to be people who appreciate the out of doors, whether it be to walk in the woods as pure enjoyment of nature or a search for the wood that makes a treasure yet to be seen. Such a turn of enjoyment also tends to make the turner of wood into a person who appreciates a summer garden with its blooms and foliage of myriad colors. How then, might one integrate the two? Wood has long had its place in the garden. The earliest tools were made of wood whether the handle or blade of a shovel or trowel. Many gardens are edged with wood either in the form of rounds from a trunk, boards laid as brick or the more modern railroad tie given new life as garden surround. The fascination with raised bed gardening in recent times has only added to the use of week as border and edging. Moreover, who could forget the fascination of peering through the wooden pickets of the old fence into the forbidden world of the neighbor’s garden when one was merely a lad or lass, thinking of the first strawberry of the season? Even for something as simple a planting tool, the wood turner may step forward. These days a trowel of metal and plastic is the norm while only a few short years ago a gardener would have used a wooden dibber, sometimes called a dibble, to get the seeds and bulbs in place. Certainly no English gardener would be found without one. There are still a few places where one can purchase a dibber, and organic gardeners have become once again champions of these simple tools of wood, but for the turner they are a simple project and can be made to fit one’s hand. A piece of suitable wood such as maple or ash is placed on the lathe and turned round. A handle of about four inches is turned at one end and then the other is given an elegant curve to a blunt point. For the purposes of later planting, particularly of bulbs, a series of rings is etched along the curve with the pint of a skew, about an inch apart. These serve as depth gages to ensure that seeds and bulbs are planted to the correct depth. Usually a dibber is used in well prepared garden soil. Either it is used to lightly scratch a line for planting small seeds or inserted a bit deeper for the large ones. It is at bulb planting it excels. For a bulb to be planted three inches deep as for instance in the case of a gladioli, the dibber is plunged to a depth of four inches as indicated by its depth lines. This allows for later infilling of the hole by a bit of dirt and leaving the three inch depth required by the bulb. In fact the hole tends to fill up with earth, especially in good, well tilled ground, and this discourages many who do not know the trick to a dibber to conclude that it is no good. In fact, it is merely necessary to insert the tool and rotate it in a small circle to the circumference of the bulb to leave the proper hole with lightly packed earth on the sides. A bulb is inserted into the hole and the dibber plunged immediately beside it and rocked back and forth. As the dibber is removed it backfills over the bulb and leaves a hole for watering that will gradually be filled with earth from the gentle erosion of the summer rains. As one uses a dibber in the garden from the hand of the wood turner it is not hard to realize that we have joined the ranks of gardeners from yesteryear in carefully planting for the future. Aviation Employment Boards And Finding Work

Sunday, October 28th, 2007

By Matthew Keegan Finding work in the aviation industry involves spending time on the internet researching companies, obtaining contact information, and doing plenty of cold calling before landing your first interview. Fortunately, there are numerous sites online providing excellent information on how to find work. Lets take a look at some of the more important ones. Major Job Boards: Three national job boards list the majority of opportunities available for all job fields, including those outside of aviation. Monster.com, Career Builder, and Yahoos Hot Jobs are favorite sources for listing jobs. All three offer free registration as well as free access to available opportunities. Major Aviation Sites: Quite a number of sites featuring aviation opportunities exist. Most require registration and only a few, including the Aviation Employment Board, do not charge membership fees. Top sites include: AEPS.com AtlasAviation.com AvCrew.com AviaNation.com Aviation.Thingamajob.com AviationEmployment.com AviationEmploymentBoard.net AviationJobsOnline.com Avjobs.com Climbto350.com FlightInternationalJobs.com FliteInfo.com NationsJobs.com ParcAviation.aero The following sites can help you find work, they are agencies and will require you to register and pay a fee: IntegrityFlightCrews.com Jet-Professionals.com JSFirm.com In addition there are scores of smaller or specialized sites out there for specific career choices such as for pilots, flight attendants, and others: CorporateFlyer.net PilotJobs.com Not all sites are listed, but with a Google search others can easily be turned up. Be aware that some sites simply copy job opportunities from other sites, so you may be paying for something that is otherwise free! Employment Screening Tests

Saturday, October 27th, 2007

By Josh Riverside After the pre-screening of the applicant, the employee gets the details regarding the applicant’s credentials, education, and criminal background. The employer also has the other details such as drug abuse and sexual harassment records to ensure that the candidate does not create any problems later on. However, this screening does not provide the employer an insight of the technical and general knowledge possessed by the candidate. A different kind of screening test would be required to check if the candidate would be well suited for the post. Employee screening tests must provide accurate and relevant information with regards to the industry for which the candidate has applied. Pre-employment test selectors can help the employers decide on what screening would be necessary for the post for while the applicant applied. It can be used to assess the applicants abilities with respect to the applied post. The test selector has a very wide database consisting information regarding the skill sets required for a specific profession. The best would be picked up for the candidates assessment based on the skills the job requires. The test would reveal whether the candidate is fit for the job. The first part might contain general question relating to aptitude, math, and comprehensive English. The second part would have technical questions to enable the employer decide if the candidate has the requisite knowledge and abilities to handle the said job. Test selectors can be used to assess the candidates technical and general knowledge but it still depends on the hiring manager to decide on other factors before employing the individual. Also, the hiring manager must ensure that the test selector has been able to pick the correct assessment based on the requisites provided by the user. Employment Screening provides detailed information about employment screening, employment drug screening, and more. Employment Screening is affiliated with Background Checks. Add Spice to Your Life with Mexican Food

Friday, October 26th, 2007

By Chris McCarthy One of the finest cuisines that satiate the gastronomic desires of people worldwide is Mexican food. Mexican food refers to a style of food that originated from Mexico. You will love Mexican cuisine due to its varied flavours, grand decoration and its enticing spicy taste. The history of Mexican food can be traced back to pre-Hispanic traditions. The Aztecs and the Spanish colonists contributed handsomely to the evolution of the cuisine. Beef, chicken, pork etc. are some of the chief non-vegetarian ingredients. Pepper, broccoli, cauliflower, radish etc. are some of the vegetarian ingredients that are used in abundance. It is said that Mexican gastronomy is also to some extent influenced by the Caribbean and the French. Mexican food varies in taste and style from region to region in the country. Climatic conditions, and ethnic differences have cast their impact on Mexican gastronomy. In northern Mexico, you will find beef and meat items aplenty. To the contrary, the south-eastern part of the country is famous for its spicy vegetable and chicken items. Now let us taste virtually a few well-known Mexican delicacies. “Aquas frescas” is a refreshing beverage formed of fruits, cereals or seeds, sugar and water. The beverage is not only popular in Mexico, but also in Central America and the Caribbean islands. Aquas frescas has some highly sought-after flavours. Aagua de tamarindo is a popular variety of Aquas frescas that includes tamarind pods. Agua de jamaica is prepared with Roselle and agua de horchata includes rice. You can easily obtain the beverage from street vendors. Another popular Mexican cuisine that will tickle your taste buds is “Arroz con Pollo”. This is a dish comprising rice and chicken in Spanish. This item is considered to be a traditional delicacy. The highly luscious dish is prepared from rice, sofrito - a mixture of vegetables and fresh herbs, saffron and off course chicken. Next, lets have a taste of “Barbacoa”. From historical times till date, Barbacoa is perceived to the original barbecue. Barbacoa refers to meat slowly cooked over an open fire. Barbacoa de cabeza, a North Mexican delicacy, is slowly cooked cow head. Barbacoa percolated into Texan cuisine where it was gradually transformed to the highly admired barbeque. After Barbacoa, lets introduce “Pico de gallo” to our taste buds. The name is derived from Spanish meaning roosters beak. Pico de gallo is actually a fruit salad with limejuice spread all over. Salty white chilli powder is sprinkled before serving. Our last Mexican platter of the day is “Taco”. Taco is a traditional Mexican offering comprising rolled maize tortilla with meat feelings. Generally grilled beef, picadillo, fish, pork or chicken is used for the filling. Taco tastes even yummier with chopped onion, chilli salsa, and other garnishes. In Mexico, you will find several varieties of Taco. The serving of a Taco is quite interesting. It is traditionally served flat on a tortilla and the tortilla itself is being warmed up on a comal. The tortilla being soft, it can be folded into a U-shape for ease of consumption. Cheese, lettuce and beef- all contribute to make Taco a mouth-watering dish. Mexican gastronomy relate to rich variety of tastes. The food is considered to provide you a handsome dose of proteins, vitamins and minerals. However to some, Mexican food appears greasy and too much spicy. Chris McCarthy owns InsaneChicken’s Hot Sauce and BBQ Sauce Catalog. InsaneChicken’s Hot Sauce and BBQ Catalog also has a large selection of BBQ Rubs. Registration Forms: How to Make Them Irresistible with Discounts

Wednesday, October 24th, 2007

By Bill Flagg Everyone LOVES to save money or get a deal when making a purchase - and registering for an event is no different. Use pricing discounts to give your prospective registrants an opportunity to save on the registration fee. We’re not saying everybody, every time - pricing discounts are typically based on timing, volume, or type of registrant. Early-Birds Get the Discounts You’ve seen it or at least heard about it, but are you using one of the most popular and successful discount hooks - the Early-Bird Special? An early deadline creates urgency to get the registration done quickly before the discount expires on the date you set. In our experience, over 80% of registrants take advantage of early-bird pricing if the discount is compelling. For example $89 versus $109 or $389 versus $449. Be prepared though, inevitably the procrastinators will call after the deadline making their best plea to get the Early-Bird pricing. You’ll need to determine ahead of time if you want to be flexible or toe the line when you get these calls. It’s imperative, too, that you send your marketing materials at least one month in advance of the Early-Bird deadline to insure that you give people an adequate amount of lead time to register. The More the Better Volume discounts encourage people to promote your event to others. Offer a reduced fee - typically 10-15% off the full fee - for group registrations. Or, charge full price for the first three registrants and throw the fourth registration in for free. Membership Has Its Privileges Varying pricing by registrant type is another another popular form of discounting. Most common is a member and non-member rate where non-members pay a higher registration fee. This approach can also be extended to students, exhibitors or other groups at your event. The Golden Rule: Keep it Simple The easier a discount is to understand, the more likely people are to take action on them. So keep them simple. I sincerely hope this article makes your conference and event registration even more successful! By Tresaca Hamilton The year is almost over and the last half of this year will fly by just as fast as the first half. Are you on target for meeting your business goals for this year? If you answered yes, congratulations!Keep reading for ideas that will help you stay on track. If you answered no, don’t panic.Keep reading to find out how to get back on track soyou can meet or exceed your business goals for this year. This is part 1 of a 2 part article series that will show youhow to avoid another year of not reaching your business goals. How can your business make a greater impact in the marketplace before this year is over? What marketing strategies worked for you and which ones bombed so far this year?Focus on the strategies that are working for you, and work to make them even better to ensure greater results and more clients before the end of this year. Think about holding a contest or special event before this year is over. You can create something unique or you can tie your event into a major holiday. Put the event on your marketing calendar and give yourselfat least three months to plan and promote it. Set a goal to issue at least three Press Releases before this year is out.Think about upcoming programs and services that you are launching and find a way to create a newsworthy Press Release about it.Mark the dates for issuing your Press Releases on your marketing calendar. Set a goal to do at least two marketing campaigns before this year is out.If you are not on target for meeting your revenue goals for this year, you will need to do more than two campaigns.Maximize the effectiveness of each campaign by doing an online versionas well as a direct mail version. DURING AUGUST: In August, focus on generating more revenue for your business.Since ‘Back to School’ is a major theme during this month,’educate’ your clients and prospects. You can do this through value packed seminars, teleclasses, infoproducts, and conferences. In addition to providing value, your goal is to show your prospectshow you can help them solve their problems. You can offer a Fall sale for a service or product that is new or old, but make sure your prospects are aware of the increased value of the offer due to the decreased price. Make the offer compelling enough so they will buybefore the sale ends. If you don’t have an infoproduct, spend the month of August creating your first one and draft a plan for future infoproducts. DURING SEPTEMBER: In September, leave obscurity behind.Gain more recognition for your business throughpublic speaking, networking, and publishing. Volunteer to speak at seminars held by business associations or your local chamber. Start with business associations that you are a member of, and look for other opportunities for speaking by offering to speak in front of local groups that are comprised of your target market. Step up your networking activities to gain more visibility for your business. If you are currently only doing yournetworking offline, add online networking to the mix. Approach every networking opportunity with the intentto connect with at least three people.Focus on learning more about their business and their challenges. Exchange business cards after you have made a connection and follow up immediately.Stay in touch with your networking contacts on a regular basis. If you are not already publishing a newsletter, spend the month of September creating your first one.If you don’t want to commit to publishing a newsletter on a regular basis, then publish articles that focus on your areas of expertise. By Kum Martin Review Of Matchmaker.com There are many online dating websites available to singles these days. Some are newer to the online community whereas other dating websites have been in existence for quite a while. One such website which singles have been using for a good while is Matchmaker.com. This site provides so many wonderful options for those who wish to meet a potential mate through online means. Free Options/Paid Options Most online dating websites will provide two types of options for online daters to pursue which are free options and paid options. Matchmaker.com allows individuals to set up their profiles for free as well as search the site free of charge. As for the paid portion of this website, one who wishes to make contact with other members needs to obtain a Gold Membership which will give them IM, email and chat capabilities. Keyword Search Frequently one will be searching for potential mates who have certain desirable traits. With the keyword search located on Matchmaker.com one is able to type in the desired traits for individuals in their locale and see what results pop up. This is a great search option to take advantage of when using a dating website and Matchmaker.com realizes this by making it available to members. Large Online Dating Community Due to its well-known name, Matchmaker.com has many members within its online dating community. Each and every day one will find new members logging on to find potential love interests and make a match.
